In Praise of Raddington

On mornings wild, through wind and rain

Across the fields we go,

All to sing at Raddington,

With voices high or low.

We sing full-voiced, the psalms and  hymns

of Parry, Dykes and Goss

(but first we must take off our boots

Stuck round with mud and moss).

As we fumble with our books

Our place by gaslight is found

And only Colin's willing feet.

Make the 'organ' sound.

We watch the sky, we watch the rooks,

The clouds upon the breeze.

And then we find, while singing loud

We're swaying like the trees.

Dear little church, all by itself

At the bottom of the field;

Here we gain an hour of quiet,

And the souls of men are healed.

Marcia Fielden.
